Tips ‘n’ Tricks for WWE Mayhem

Save the Special

Consecutive attacks charge up the special move meter with more damaging moves requiring more charge. Needless to say special moves are critical to dealing heavy damage and winning matches, yet it is important to use them wisely and not rush into using them too quickly.  By not timing special moves properly opponents can counter special moves with a reversal which not only wastes the built up charge yet more importantly aids opponents as they can use the momentum to deliver their own power move.

Relish the Reversal!

As previously mentioned timing is everything in WWE Mayhem. Thus rather than throw out the special move as soon as it becomes available it is at times better to save it and focus on the reversal.  Therefore the best way to use special moves without fear of it being reversed wait till it is fully charged and opponents have already been stunned and low on health.

Time the Taps!

Creating success combinations is key winning matches. Obviously different characters interact differently and there is no one-fits all sure –fire method of success, however, a few of the best ways is to tap, tap, swipe and wait a second before building a critical hit followed by a special.  Alternatively players can take a step back and charge a heavy attack and wait for the opponent to walk into it before continuing with a range of strikes.

It is also important to be patient as blocks can’t be broken through so there is no point in trying to attack and conversely doing so will actually stun the attacker and open them up to a counter from the previously blocking opponent. So again, it is best to link three attacks, dash backwards, block, and then wait to unleash a special.

Enjoy the Events!

Due to the fact that players can’t replay completed stories, players should aim to compete in as difficult a mode as possible to capitalize on bonus loot. Therefore the best way to grind out resources to fund upgrades players should make the most out the timed events which while lengthy and cost a lot of energy, they reward well.  The Verses mode also offers great loot and rewards yet does cost cash

Class Categories

Just as with other fighting games like Marvels multiple titles etc. there is a power buffing rock-scissors-paper style system where different wresters gain or lose an advantage over others.

  • Brawlers beat Wildcards,
  • Wildcards beat Technicians,
  • Technicians beat Powerhouses,
  • Powerhouses beat High Fliers,
  • High Fliers beat Showmen,
  • Showmen beat Brawlers.

These buffs should always be taken advantage of when possible which means that players should always be sure to preview the lineup in an event or chapter so as to plan out an order of attack and save certain characters for when they are most valuable. Yet one of the great features of WWE Mayhem is that the game will automatically select class advantage characters or the strongest wrestler.

Even without any class category issues, it is always best to play weaker characters first to save the most powerful wrestlers for the ‘boss’ stage of chapters and events. Sacrificing weaker wrestlers and saving stronger characters sounds harsh but is actually the best way to save on health kits and revivals as all characters are revived and restored with full health after completing the event or chapter.  If however, flush with health kits, then the flipside is best.  By using the strongest character for every battle, players can win matches much quicker and actually end up taking less damage, yet it is a little risky so best to have a few health kits on hand.

When building a team to compete with it is important to not simply pick fan favourites or even those which offer the strongest stats, it is important to pay attention to synergies between characters. When correctly paired together select wrestlers or even the entire team can gain various buffs including, added health, strength and critical hit chance etc.

Upgrades & Ranks

Just as with other card collecting games different characters are divided into tiered ranks. Starting out only one and two star characters are available for free, yet by collecting level-up bottles and cash players can increase players’ stats which is absolutely necessary to win matches.  Upgrading can become extremely expensive however, so it is best to focus energies only higher tiered characters and almost not even bother with tier one wrestles.  If however flush with bottles and cash then players can rank-up their wrestlers by upgrading to the max level and then unlock a new limit.  When upgrading it is also important to match

Personal Impressions // Review of WWE Mayhem

WWE Mayhem is actually a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be! The graphics and animation are sharp enough to look good and the voice over commentary realistic enough to please fans.  The fight dynamics can at times feel a little sluggish yet is essentially quite well done. With the super specials and signature moves being especially vibrant and sell designed.  The range of characters is vast enough to cater to fans and laymen alike with the availability of free chests and loot common enough to reward by constantly logging in.

There are unfortunately a few issues which hold it back from being a truly fantastic gaming experience. The first which is common to many like games is that the easy to pick up gameplay format can become a little repetitive and tedious as the grind goes on.  This is particularly noticeable as the cash needed to rank up characters becomes exhaustively higher than the amount won in matches.  WWE Mayhem is also perhaps one of the fastest battery draining games that we’ve reviewed here at Blue Lagoon.  Thus be sure to have a charger on hand and be prepared for your device to heat up extremely fast!

Yet perhaps the greatest, and definitely the easiest to remedy through a simple update patch, is that there is no bonus loot for winning a flawless victory. Due to the fact that different class categories behave differently with speed and power perfect faultless wins are actually much rarer than one would first think.  Therefore it only seems natural to have a little bonus loot to reward perfect plays.  Had the story mode had a little animated intro / taunt from the boss of that chapter then the depth of the story mode would be much more addictive.  Despite the bad, there is still a lot of enjoyment to be had, so all in all WWE Mayhem scores a comfortable two and a half stars out of five.
