An Introduction to War Wings
From gaming giants Miniclip comes a fun filled action packed historical arcade shooter that pits player against player in aerial dogfights as they strive to pull off gravity defying stunts and tricks to become the greatest pilot of the skies! Winning battles and dogfights earns XP, and prizes which can be used to upgrade existing and purchase new planes. Players can also complete single player daily missions for bonus rewards if not wanting to compete online.
War Wings : Gameplay
With a variety of controls available players can choose between virtual joysticks, keypads and tilt screen options to steer and maneuver their plane. Similarly, as with most other simulators, players can invert the Y-axis to better suit ol’ school physical joystick players who grew up on retro MSFS (Microsoft flight simulator) in the eighties. This is a very personal setting yet one which must be set immediately within the settings menu to properly enjoy War Wings.
Pitch, yaw and roll along with general strafing are done with the left thumb (if set to the default virtual joystick) with weapons selection, deployment and reloading done on the right, as well as toggling between map views.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for War Wings
Master the Map!
Knowing where the enemy targets are is half the battle in War Wings! Simply flying around aimlessly is the best way to get prematurely shot down, yet by constantly checking the radar navigation mapping system players can quickly head towards targets or execute evasive maneuvers if an enemy is directly behind.
For out of range targets or if nothing is within the immediate vicinity, then players should rapidly flick between “God View” and back to get an top down aerial grasp of positioning. The “Jager” on the other hand briefly switches to auto-pilot and automatically steers the plane towards the primary target. The “Padlock” feature helps players to focus on a particular target and also shows relative positioning.
Locking onto a target and compulsively focusing on that one target is of course great to secure a sure kill, yet it is actually far better, more efficient and safer to play free and flexible and just trust instincts and literally fly off the cuff (or off the handle even!)
If under heavy fire from behind, first quickly check your six by hitting the reverse angle icon next to the reload button. Then by knowing where the enemy is firing from, swipe anywhere on screen to perform a barrel roll / aileron roll to briefly escape the onslaught of bullets. Yet to effectively evade enemy fire it is best to roll away from the enemy and immediately boost whilst turning hard, (turning into the enemy also works great if in super close as this will give more time as it will take longer for the enemy plane to correct their path and begin targeting again). It should also be noted that the aileron roll is also perfectly suited to attacking and hunting down enemy planes that are trying their best to evade your hellfire.
As planes duck and weave in dogfights, it is imperative to be aware of the enemies trajectory and as such aim where they will be rather than where they immediately are. This distance will of course vary depending on how close or far opponents are. Therefore, the best way to is to always aim for and shoot the yellow target that is usually ahead of the nose of enemy planes. With efficient sharp shooting it is possible to take down multiple planes without reloading, so be sure to be as conservative with bullets as possible and also make the most of idle times and reload when out of range of any targets.
Stay with the Pack!
In both offense and defense, being in the thick of it is far better than being the lone wolf which can easily be picked off. Being with your squad can provide players with support if being targeted as well as offering enemies more targets where they may cease targeting your plane and switch to other. The same is in effect when attacking as by having multiple targets players can pepper gunfire over a manifold of planes rather than struggling to down the solo. So in summary, remember that while it is cool to be the lone wolf even Jordan needed Pippin and Rodman to dominate, so be sure to keep in mind that there is safety in numbers.
Constantly battling is the best and essentially only free way of getting ahead quickly in War Wings. Whether players win or lose, they will receive RP (Research Points) to build and upgrade better and more effective weapons and planes. Following, be sure to continually check what current missions and available as well as constantly working towards completing achievements and logging in daily, as these three simple steps will reap valuable rewards and enable rapid research and upgrades. The different types
Stock the Supplies!
As players obtain better and better planes and invest in more research, supply slots will open up on planes where players can add items and equipment to planes to add buffs and benefits. These items are generally split into either offensive or defensive so it is crucial to equip those which best suit gameplay. If players tend to charge forward then equipping ammo buffs and fire extinguishers is best, yet if a little more defensive, then med-kits etc. may be better.
Altitude is Advantageous!
This as with most elements varies to due levels, missions, equipment and opponents etc. yet as a general rule of thumb and as obvious as it may sound, when in a plane “up is better!” Despite how apparent and understandable as this is, it is actually quite common for enemy players to forget this and spin in circles while players can reign down fire from above.
Staying high is also extremely advantageous as diving will increase speed without using boosts, yet climbing will slow down acceleration which means that players will need to evaporate boosts to climb quickly when evading and thus lose advantage in both defense and possible future offense.

Personal Impressions // Review of War Wings
The most impressive (yet perhaps boring) aspect of War Wings is the historical accuracy within the details. Sure the missions and gameplay is fictitious yet the hardware within is well researched and satisfying.
For seasoned gamers, War Wings is extremely simple to pick up much like those favourite pair of jeans, for those new to flight simulators, it may take a little more time to get used to yet can still be mastered within the first few attempts. This is where the subtlety of the matching algorithm is to be accredited. Players are seamlessly paired in battles where XP and hardware are matched fairly to create a well-balanced battlefield.
The size of the initial download is heavy enough to disparage first time gamers, yet overall, War Wings is worth the free download and time invested. Patience is advised as, as with the majority of Miniclip games, the product is premium yet laden with limits set in motion to lure players into IAP’s. That said however the game can be perfectly enjoyed for free with a grind yet due to the well-designed matchmaking, actually remains fun for quite a long time! Four stars out of five.
