TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight

An Introduction to TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight

“Calling all Autobots, Decepticons, Predacons and Maximals!”

En route to rebuild their savaged war-torn home world of Cybertron, the heroic Autobot’s ship is mysteriously drawn off course to a strange unknown world where due to an enigmatic energy source all forms of Transformers are inexplicitly materializing. Yet due to peculiar energy source, all former alliances and bonds are shattered as friends become foes and enemies become allies.  Moreover, one of the biggest drawcards to TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight is the range of characters included!  Much like Power Rangers: Legacy Wars the storyline includes ol’ school classic characters as well as the modern day famous faces.

TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight : Gameplay

From Kabam, the makers of the smash hit mobile brawler game MARVEL Contest of Champions, comes another action packed game that is very similar in gameplay.

The range of controls is actually very impressive in Forged to Fight! Expanding beyond a simple one button masher brawler game, TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight includes a range of attacks, blocks and movements which make it feel more like a console game than that of a touchscreen mobile app!

The right thumb controls attacks with taps for light attacks, swipes for medium and presses for heavies. The left thumb controls movement back and forth and also pivots left and right to avoid oncoming assaults and to also sneak past guards.  The left thumb also controls a defensive blocking guard and activates the special move attacks as well.

Apart from a very captivating single player story arc, there are multiplayer PvP battles, in depth global events, daily quests and campaign missions.

  • Deploy away teams to score epic loot

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight

Jab, Jab, Smash!

One of the best aspects of Transformers: Forged to Fight is its adaption of ol’ school console beat ’em ups onto a touch screen mobile format. Complete with light, medium and heavy attacks, players can also dodge forwards, backwards and more importantly circle on a vertical axis to avoid oncoming projectiles and better aim when attacking.

Therefore to make the most of these controls, don’t waste them by just button mashing a single attack. Instead (obviously this depends on the character being played) it is best to open immediately with a series of quick light attacks, then time a heavy attack and then follow with some swiping medium attacks before unleashing the special move and then top it all off with a peppering of long range projectiles.  Rinse and repeat.

Squads.

Each character falls into one of six different class system of categories which have a familiar “rock, scissors, paper” format.

  • Scout Bots quickly eliminate opponents with frequent Special Attacks and a high Critical Rate. Their rapid attacks gives them an advantage over Tech bots.
  • Tech Bots generate shields, manipulate Power, and equip some of the most advanced custom weaponry. Their shielding abilities helps them when facing Demolitions bots.
  • Demolitions Bots are burst damage experts that buff their Special Attacks for bigger, bolder, explosions. Their fewer attacks gives them an advantage over Tactician bots.
  • Tactician Bot’s strong synergies and master strategies help them adapt during a fight to turn their enemies’ strength against them. Their anti-Armor abilities helps them when facing Brawler bots.
  • Brawler Bots are armored allies and furious foes that value strength at any cost. They have low Critical Rate and high attack gives them an advantage over Warrior bots.
  • Warrior Bots have deadly accuracy and love bleeding Energon from their opponents. Their tracking systems gives them an advantage over the evasive Scout bots.

So in summary, Scouts trump Techs, Techs trump Demolitions, Demolitions trump Tacticians, Tacticians trump Brawlers, Brawlers trump Warriors and closing the circle Warriors trump Scouts.

Therefore when selecting a three bot squad it is important to take a variety of class categories into battle. This is especially true when replaying and grinding out missions to obtain the 100% exploration where players can remember the type of enemy and adjust their team for the next time they play.

Upgrades.

Ore-13 is the key! Available in a variety of quantities and types, ore can be better suited to specific class distinctions.  Yet ore and the gold needed to upgrade characters can quickly become short in supply.  Therefore, it is crucial to know how to upgrade with proper efficiency.

First off, characters with a higher star rating can be ranked up higher and upgraded more than single star characters. They do cost more to upgrade, yet in the long run it is far more profitable and efficient to focus upgrades on higher star bots, regardless of how weak they initially are.

The next most important aspect is to pay attention to the class system. Therefore, try to pick a favourable bot within each category and only focus on upgrading those characters alone and do not upgrade multiple characters of the same class unless wildly flush with gold and resources.

Stash.

The stash feature is essentially a backup storage holding where items in excess can be held until being able to use them. The most common item to be stockpiled here will more often than not be excess Ore-13 which is awaited the necessary gold to be converted into upgrades.  With a limited space and timeframe in which items can be stored it is tempting to sell items for gold, yet it is much better to resist and be the tortoise rather than the hare.

Play While Away!

The action packed single player arc along with the numerous avenues of multiplayer are fun but only part of the game. By acquiring numerous bots, players can rotate their strongest line-up on missions whilst weaker bots can be set to defending the base, farming resources and sent on campaigns from the mobile command station to gather resources to further aid upgrades and progression.

Alliances.

The alliance feature is actually a huge part of the game and opens up a much wider and deeper range of gameplay. More importantly, resources and energy sparks can be exchanged between team members which can allow for mutually beneficial strengthening of individual members and the entire alliance itself.

Personal Impressions // Review of TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight

On first impression I was quite impressed with TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight! Within the game there is actually a whole lot more than meets the eye! (Sorry I couldn’t resist!)  The graphics are extremely crisp with extremely responsive controls which allow for strategic combinations being strung together with proper timing.  The 360 degree battle arenas also allow for much more involved gameplay rather than simple button mashing.  The BGM and sound effects are equally well matched without overshadowing the other facets.  Had they actually included a few voice overs even if only the iconic voice of Peter Cullen / Optimus Prime, then Forged to Fight would be that much more appealing.

The depth of upgrades and variety of shards and crystal etc. is great for Meta loving gamers, yet perhaps a little too complicated with too little information to explain the process. The only other real issue with TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight is that the game burns through battery life like nothing else!  So be sure to have a charger ready if planning on a lengthy session.  The grind for coins is also a little on the heavy side, yet with the range of missions available this is not a real issue.

All in all whilst it may not be for everyone’s liking, yet if a fan of previous Transformer games like Earth Wars or simply enjoy a good brawler, then TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight could be perfect for you! Four stars out of five.
