The X-Files: Deep State : Gameplay
At its core Deep State is a hidden object game which follows in gameplay to virtually every other game within the genre. This means that depending on the mini game mission players will either simply tap through text to choose multiple choice answers, drag and swipe to rearrange puzzles and when searching for clues focus mostly on visually searching for particular items before tapping upon them and then spending time to investigate them. As a freemium game Deep State makes use of a play-limiting energy meter which prevents continuous gameplay unless willing to invest IRC. That said however, the bite-sized piecemeal missions lend themselves well to this format where players need to switch between active play and offline wait-time unlocking items.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for The X-Files: Deep State
Search before you Start!
Just as with other hidden object games, the number one most important thing to do is to take a mental snapshot of the scene before you activate the countdown. Whilst the entire scene is usually unable to be seen, it is still absolutely essential to take note of what items need to be found and then find as many as possible before activating gameplay. Doing so also preserves the booster bonus as if players link finds together then they can capitalize on the bonus to a much higher rate. So if in doubt and unable to immediately find all listed items it is best to take a moment to survey the surroundings or simply start mashing until something pops up. Otherwise if flush with time try holding down on the item tab to get a visual idea of what the item looks like.
Mulder or Scully?
Before too long during the progression of the narrative of each case it evidently becomes transparently clear that each dialogue choice is geared to direct the story towards the end result. These choices whilst sometimes vaguely similar or vastly polar, generally lean towards the personality of one of the two main characters of the series. If players choice the more absurd or “Mulder” path then they can earn a “I believe” point which whilst not all that important makes for more incentive to lean either one way or the other as opposed to flip-flopping back and forth in the middle.
Investigate, Re-Investigate, Rinse and Repeat!
Completing investigations by successfully finding all of the items rewards players with a star which is needed to unlock new stages of the case. However, as the case progresses, more and more stars are needed yet as the investigations become more difficult with shorter time limits it can be difficult at times to have enough stars to fund new stages. Therefore, it is best to replay investigation scenes immediately after completing whilst they is still refresh in mind.
- Prime the Puzzles! – Just as with jigsaw puzzles the best way is to start at the corners and then work on the most obviously adjacent pieces next.
- Aim to complete games in blocks of ten to make the most out of bonus loot boxes.
- Save hints for later stages, yet spend surplus stars on ‘special buddle sales’.
Personal Impressions // Review of The X-Files: Deep State
The carbon copy format of gameplay which is practically identical to all other titles within the genre allows for players with experience to rapidly pick up the game with very little effort. This positive however is also a negative as the lack of originality quickly plummets into a game of repetition. The graphics are at times well developed whilst at other times unfortunately feels a little off. The dialogue in itself also traverses between being boring and rudimentary yet also comically hilarious and thought provoking.
The ability to see stats regarding how other players made choices at the conclusion of cases is perhaps one of the most interesting aspect of Deep State as the actual storyline for all the awards the series has won, somehow feels a little too convoluted for its own good. That said, for dire hard believers and lovers of the X-Files universe, Deep State is fairly well balanced between a variety of mini-games and role-playing dialogue. Therefore if prepared to go into it without the highest of expectations, then Deep State can be quite enjoyable if only for a while. If however looking for a game that is addictively difficult to put down, perhaps this is not the one for you. All in all The X-Files: Deep State has enough to warrant three stars out of five.
