The Battle of Polytopia

An Introduction to The Battle of Polytopia

With the civilisation and build genre being as saturated as they are, it is truly a pleasure to introduce a truly free to play and enjoyable game that can be enjoyed in short stints without having to invest months of gameplay before seeing any rewards! And that is exactly what makes Polytopia so great!
For here is a game that limits gameplay, builds, battles and exploration to a set number of moves which makes each playing a fresh and new adventure that can be quickly enjoyed and, if a more serious gamer, can be learnt upon.

The Battle of Polytopia : Gameplay

Set within a minecraft styled blocky universe, players first and foremost must select a tribe to embark upon the world with. Different tribes have different strengths starting out. The Perfection mode of gameplay features turn based combat where players must make the most out of every move to capitalize on the 4X, (eXplore / eXpand / eXploit / eXterminate) within a limited amount of moves.

Features of The Battle of Polytopia

The Battle of Polytopia is a turn based strategic adventure. It’s a game about ruling the world, fighting evil AI tribes, discovering new lands and mastering new technologies.

Auto generated maps make each game a new experience, with unlimited replay value.

Pick and choose among different tribes. Wander in the dark cold forests of Barduria, explore the steamy Kickoo jungles or claim the lush field of the Imperius empire.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for The Battle of Polytopia

Sail The Seas!

Despite the range of options available of mining, farming, hunting your way to world domination, exploring the seas is by far and away the best option and surest way of regulating a powerful win. This is obviously subject to the tribe chosen to play and the randomly generated map assigned, yet as a general rule of thumb, by mastering the seas, players will have more areas to eXplore, more regions to eXpand, more resources to eXploit and more enemies to eXterminate!

Explore and Expand!

Once certain criteria has been met, town halls can be upgraded to higher levels with a bonus of earning certain buffs. These bonuses come in the form of a choice between two options.  Despite how alluring the other option may, it is always best to expand your boarders first and foremost.  This allows insight to other lands and potential areas to colonize or battle and as such allows players to train the right troop for that area and highlight where and where not to focus attention on.

Tech Tree

Tempting as it is to be a jack of all trades, it is actually far better to be a master of one. Therefore it is important that the very first thing to do upon starting a game is to take time to survey the immediate surroundings and try to anticipate the greater area.  If there is plenty of wildlife, then focus on hunting and riding, if filled with mountains then concentrate on climbing and mining.  No matter what the branch of research, it is generally best to complete the entire research branch rather than dabbling in all of them.  That said, it is necessary to know at least the basics so doing the first tier of research of all research and then specializing from there is best.  If unsure of what area to specialize in, then refer to the first hint and take to the seas!

Personal Impressions // Review of The Battle of Polytopia

The minimalistic approach with very little tutorial along with the retro polymorphic design and nostalgic sound effects perfectly create a sense of awe and wonderment as hearts and minds un-expectantly time warp back to childhood where new games were often mysterious and where the only way to know what to do was to try it out.

The “thrown in the deep end” aspect of Polytopia may be a distancing factor to some, yet it is actually one of the games strongest draw cards! This along with the limited gameplay truly creates a fresh and exciting new gaming experience every time the app is opened.  This attention to the first and foremost rule of any game that it has to be entertaining, is explicitly apparent and the real reason why the game is so haunting and addictive without having to invest months if not years of build time to reap the enjoyment.

With very little going against it, Polytopia easily scores a very strong four and a half stars out of five!
