Snake VS Block

An Introduction to Snake VS Block

Expanding on one of the most iconic games in mobile gaming history, Nokia’s Snake was one of the original pioneers and as such has become an inspiration to countless games since its initial release. Thus this Snake styled game also incorporates an endless runner style of automation combined with another iconic genre of retro brick crushing.

Snake VS Block : Gameplay

In Snake VS Blockplayers use a universally simple one touch swipe to steer left and right with forward momentum being automated. The yellow balls with numbers above them ad to the length of your snake and as such need to be collected as often as possible.  The blocks with their numbers indicate how many yellow balls will take to smash through.  Once your snake runs out of segments (yellow balls) then the round is over.  This is the entire premise of the game which makes it extremely easy to pick up, yet very difficult to master as players will not only need to test lightning reflexes yet also garner a prescient sense of where weaker and stronger blocks are likely to show up!

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Snake VS Block

Look Ahead!

Without a doubt the most important aspect is to constantly be scanning the scrolling horizon to try to collect as many balls as possible while avoiding the heavy hitter blocks. Doing so however opens up the biggest deliberation; “Is it better to aim to lengthen your snake at the cost of hitting stronger blocks, or is it better to focus instead on dodging hard blocks at the cost of ignoring possible power up yellow balls”?  This conundrum obviously comes down to player preference yet the easiest most obvious answer is that both are equally important!

Less Isn’t Always More!

It is very easy to simply always be aiming to hit the lowest numbered and weakest block available yet developers have upped the ante by often having weakest blocks immediately followed by walls which stream players into a much, much stronger block. This means that it may in fact be more advantageous to sacrifice a few snake segments if the following blocks are much more attainable rather than taking the easiest option only to die tragically on the next immediate hurdle.

Press and Hold!

Apart from the previous two more obvious hints, this is without a doubt a “must do” despite it being relatively unknown. Rather than waiting for objects to appear and swiping in reaction reflexes, it is far, far faster to instead simply find a comfortable non-obtrusive position anywhere onscreen and then press and hold.  This allows for much faster micro management of control which allows players to dart and weave with much greater accuracy and speed!

Personal Impressions // Review of Snake VS Block

As with a few other games that have been reviewed here at Blue Lagoon, here is a game that falls into the category of being too good for its own value. Snake VS Block through its extremely simple gameplay and quick fast rounds the game immediately becomes extremely addictive in its playability.  However!  The free-to-play version is unfortunately horribly undulated with lengthy pop-up video advertisements.  If they were a tenth of what they were, then it would still be annoying yet understandable… As it is however, having a thirty second video pop-up every time after a probable shorter gameplay makes the game frustratingly toxic to the touch!  Had the developers been slightly more patient, then players would be able to bite down deeper on the bait before being hooked into the (admittedly very reasonably priced) IAP’s.

Therefore, if looking for an easy to pick up sample of a great game, then be sure to download, yet keep in mind that to truly be able to enjoy the Snake VS Blocks, then players will need to spend the required $2.99, and as such if not willing to do so, then perhaps should not bother downloading in the first place. Thus all in all, if happy to pay for the ad-free version, the game would still only score a three and a half star rating due to the lack of any substantial growth or development during gameplay.  Yet if assessing on the free-to-play version then Snakes VS Blocks scores an unfortunate one star out of five!
