An Introduction to Rules of Survival
With such cult favourites as Battle Royale as well as Hollywood movies like The Hunger Games being so popular, it is no surprise that there is also an entire gaming genre dedicated to making it out alive. Thus the latest to join the ranks is from one of the world’s largest and most powerful IT companies in the world, China’s NetEase Games. Whilst PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds has been one of the most formidable titles on PC, there are few which command such attention on mobile device platforms.
Rules of Survival : Gameplay
Self-described as being “not a game (but) about life & death fighting”, Rules of Survival is properly better named as “Only Rule is to Survive”, since that is pretty much it! Players start out being dropped into an extremely vast high definition deserted island with over a hundred other real time online players. From there players must race to either flee or fight their way through the map until they are the only one left standing. To aid in this survival players need to search to find various weapons and gear and arm themselves as effectively as possible and take out fellow survivors, loot their hoardings, rinse and repeat.
Controls can be extensively customized beyond the three standard modes which generally involve either one or two virtual joysticks such as the classic mode where the left thumb controls movement with the right controlling weapon aiming and firing. The Advanced Mode inverts this whilst the Touch Screen Mode which utilizes taps and holds.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Rules of Survival
Find What Works for You
The ability to tweak the controls beyond the three different modes is extremely advantageous! Therefore it is well worthwhile trying each mode, find which suits best and then further customize the sensitivity so that players can move and fire fast, yet accurately. It is also highly advised to use the auto aim feature when starting out as well as the “double tap to turn around” feature which truly does aid in survival! If wanting to high-tail it though be sure to activate the auto-run feature by running for a few seconds which then allows players to focus attention elsewhere while still moving towards a desired target.
Hit the Ground Running!
Starting off, players parachute in and need to make the most of the first few seconds of gameplay where every second counts as everyone is rushing to find and equip the best gear and weapons. If wanting to go in hard and fast, set the parachute to deploy automatically, which faster than if on manual. However, if choosing to control the parachute manually, players can better control their decent and as such take advantage of surroundings.
If planning to flee from most dangers, then players should aim for vast sparse areas, yet if wanting to stock up on as much gear as possible as quickly as possible – before others, then it is best to guide avatars towards more build up areas with lots of buildings etc. This of course is but one option with the flipside being to go remote and hide while the initial blood-letting passes and the herd thins out.
Stealth = Survival!
Moving subtly and moving with purpose is key! If there is long grass it is best to lie down or duck out of view to check the radar map in the top left corner to see if there are any other survivors in the area and either sneak up to attack or run away. Entering building also demands players to remain vigil. Staying low and hunkering down is actually much more strategically wise than it is cowardly. Yet to maximize stealthy survival it is imperative to always, always important to remember to shut any door after entering. This will not only prevent any visual give-a-ways but also provide an auditory cue if somebody else enters the building. Cannot stress this enough, CLOSE DOORS!
Safety in Numbers!
Players can furthermore choose to play in solo missions or partner with a friend or random online player or team up with three others to form a squad of four. Needless to say that playing with actual IRL friends provides massive advantages as strategies can be formed and players can protect each other while scouting or attacking. Unknown pairings also increase survival chances, yet, on the flip side, bigger numbers create a much larger visual target as well as making a lot more noise which can also draw enemy fire.
The other serious kicker is that enemy teams will also have safety in numbers and often use devious tactics like leaving one sacrificial lamb out while the remainder lie in wait to sniper and then loot opponents. The other disadvantage of players with others is extremely selfish in nature but one that needs to be mentioned. If alone then any loot or resource found is 100% yours, yet if with others, then obviously half or half again will seriously limit how you the individual can better protect yourself. It is for these and more reasons (the most being that if you win solo, then the glory is all that much sweeter!) that each mode of play – including the solo arc, is extremely fun to play!
Personal Impressions // Review of Rules of Survival
The varied control structures and fluid movements of avatars is extremely well done in Rules of Survival. By having limited storage capabilities with over a hundred different rivals all within a map that is vast enough to not become repetitive nor boring. The tension of not only striving to kill everyone else but trying not to be killed through whatever means possible is actually quite ‘edge of the seat’ stuff considering that it is still just a mobile game.
That said however, as with other similar style action titles lie Modern Combat, it can take a while to become fluidly familiar with the style and pace of action, thus it is best to spend a little in a quiet corner to first get a handle before playing on the fly. Yet above this difficulty of easing laymen players in, the far more troubling issue is that the game unfortunately has a problematic amount of glitches and crashes. This is of course highly annoying for anyone, yet for those that have invested the time and energy to master the game, it is almost a game deleting offence. For having persevered for so long and close to reaping huge rewards all for nothing is quite frustrating. On a side note, RoS is also extremely heavy in its battery consumption.
Be it going it alone, with a partner or in a squad, Rules of Survival is a great first person shooter that fans of the genre and newbies alike are sure to enjoy. With great potential and a very likely top score rating, unfortunately as it currently stands, Rules of Survival scores an unfortunate three stars out of five.
