For any true to heart fan of video games and the culture and history surrounding them, the name ‘Atari’ will conjure up rare and deep seeded emotions while a soft subtle smile slowly un-expectantly uplifts the corners of their lips. It is therefore, with tremendous joy to announce that the pioneer game markers have a new development released on modern day mobile devices!
Similar to the sim / build standard genre that we all have come to know and love, RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ is extremely simple to pick up, yet once fallen into quickly becomes difficult to put down! To learn more about how to get the most out of this great game be sure to read on below!
RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ : Gameplay
Starting out players have a blank canvas of land where players must always strive to collect cards to unlock new rides, attractions, stalls, shops and decorations to create the coolest theme park of all time! To do so, players must balance thrill intensive rides, with family friendly comforts along with kid coordinated attractions all the while interspersing decorations, food and hygiene amenities to hopefully build a dream theme park. Through a variety of metrics, players generate income to upgrade existing attractions, build new ones and re-arrange layouts in a meta-based thought provoking simulation game. Incorporating clean graphics, and fluid touch tap swipe controls with pinch zoom features, players can view their park easily from a variety of angles and adjust their rides to become the tycoon of thrills!

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™
Each attraction as well as the park entrance fee itself can be raised or lowered. Lowering offers great value which will increase visitor satisfaction yet will obviously not generate income as fast as if prices were set to the highest limit. However, if set too high then visitors will quickly become unsatisfied and as such attendance will drop and subsequently the park will earn less. Therefore, for best balance and profits try to keep prices at the highest level that is still categorized as “good value”.
Adding decorations around attractions and upgrading will allow for higher pricing structures before being deemed “expensive”. So, just to reiterate: Focus on the Foliage!! By correctly adding and re-arranging foliage, pricing structures will change so be sure to regularly check to see if prices need to be raised or lowered.
Careful with Upgrading!
Starting out it is very tempting to upgrade cards as quickly as you get them yet doing so can quickly become very, very expensive and prevent players from being able to build new stalls and attractions.
Building new cards will almost always generate more income overall than upgrading an existing card. That said, upgrading is still a very necessary aspect of the game and can’t be neglected (especially in regards to foliage).
When upgrading mind you, be sure to always check the “satisfaction” metrics before upgrading without thought. While food and hygiene will generally be cheaper and more available to upgrade faster, the “fun” attributes should be focused on first to maximize profits.
Careful with Cards!
And when we say be careful with cards, what we really mean is get as many as possible, so be careful not to miss out!
Free cards can be won simply by opening up packs which become available every few hours. Therefore by simply timing log-in times, players can very easily and effortlessly level up and breeze through the progress.
Another very valuable reason to check in often is that every coin generating attraction has a limit to the amount of gold they can store. If players do not log in frequently enough then the attractions will hit their limit and stop producing any income.
Treasure those Tickets!
With gold being the common coinage of the game, ‘tickets’ are the premium currency of the game and as such need to be treasured and spent very wisely. Therefore, the best and only legit way tickets should be used is to purchase cards.
Trading for coins, or using them to complete missions is an embarrassingly rookie mistake and is highly unadvised. Thus tickets should only be used to buy more cards, yet since timing and patience is also required, for best results rather than splurging on the first available offer of ten tickets for 7 cards, it is much more profitable to hold out for 35 tickets which will earn 36 cards with the inclusion of 3 “epic” which is needless to say, much more lucrative.
Furthermore, it is also best to focus on timing as reaching higher levels will unlock newer attractions so rather than spend all tickets early on, try waiting until at least level ten status has been unlocked to then cash the tickets in to earn some truly valuable cards!
Whilst on the subject of currency, tickets can be won for free through various third-party avenues, but the whole system is a little scammy, and full of spam so unless desperate, probably not worth it. RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ is essentially completely free to play yet if wanting to speed up progress and ‘coast’ through the game, then purchasing IAP’s will definitely aid. Yet if willing to do so, again do so wisely as often there will be ‘time sale’ offers of 75% discounts / increased value. So if contemplating dropping a little real life money, then definitely start out by purchasing one of these packs before anything else!
Master the Missions!
Paying attention to what tasks need to be fulfilled to complete missions and accomplishments is another easy way to quickly gain stars that are needed to level up and acquire new cards packs to unlock new attractions and upgrading existing ones.
Another free way and effective method of gaining coins is to take advantage of the “Peep” bonus whereby from level ten onwards, players can (again) watch a short video advertisement to earn a 5% boost for 3hr, or spend valuable tickets for longer more powerful boosts. (However as previously stated, save the tickets!)
Burst those Bubbles!
Following on from the ‘missions’ tips, which also often includes the need to “listen to” as many peeps as possible, tapping on and busting the bubbles of various visitors can not only let you know of which areas need improvement, complete missions, but also from level 10 onwards reward players with precious hearts which can be used from level 25 onwards to spend on the train station to lure more peeps to the park!
Roll With the Coaster!
With the name of the game being RollerCoaster Tycoon, it is easy to get carried away and focus exclusively on the roller coasters and as much as possible as them being generally the highest earner. Yet the actual design and positional layout of the entire park and all the building in it is one of the most crucial aspects of RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ if not the most important! (See the following tip)
So as alluring as it is to spend countless hours designing and creating works of art, this is something best saved for later stages. Nevertheless when imagining designs of coasters, try to take full advantage of the horizontal and vertical tilts, twists and turns before adding special features like loops and spirals. Doing so will allow for easier tweaks when upgrading track length and so for.
Lead with the Layout!
Starting out players will have plenty of room to play with and since buildings and pathways can be moved multiple times without penalty, this is where the true enjoyment of the game lies!
Experiment with different layouts, patterns and designs until both aesthetics and functionality are in perfect harmony!
Keep in mind however, that despite certain common logic and artistic appeal, RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ is designed to be a theme park simulator and accordingly players need to take that “mentat” approach to design. Thus as ‘on the nose’ as it may be, it is best to place toilets immediately with eateries and high excitement rides. Following on, attractions and stalls of the same kind benefit greatly from being spaced out from each other as to being in close proximity. This may not sound logical to some, yet from the money syphoning viewpoint of theme parks, this catches mores “peeps” regardless of common nature logistics.
Foliage has been mentioned previously in this article, yet to maximize growth at the fastest rate possible, this is where players should focus most of their attention! Once a decent amount of structures, foliage and experience has been obtained, it may be worthwhile starting afresh. Therefore, first of all identify the top money making attractions and highest boosts bonuses (foliage and statues). Then move everything to the far corners of the available land, clear all paths and start again. Due to the name of the game the roller coaster(s) will usually be the most profitable yet also the most space consuming so try to have them at such a position and angle where building around them, boosts can then affect another or multiple more attractions.
This can become a very time consuming act, yet is after all the reason why we play simulation games in the first place right?? And once done can be either very rewarding from forming a better layout or super frustrating if having spent x-amount of time for nothing. Either or, welcome to RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™!
Personal Impressions // Review of RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™
Fans of similar such time consuming games like The Trail – A Frontier Journey along with classic simulation games like SimCity BuildIt, and Hay Day or even new age modern build / strategy games like Clash of Clans then RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ may be perfect for you! As with the previously stated games, RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ is a little slow to start and requires a fair bit of patience, yet can also be extremely fun and addictive in its structure.
Some unfortunate areas which would benefit greatly from future upgrades are that loading times are quite long when opening the app and also in-game when opening various menus.
The finesse of controls are great yet more often than not purchases of new buildings will spawn in the most difficult to spot area and as such can be very hard to find then drag and drop to the desired location.
Considering the cleanness of graphics a slightly more in depth zoom would allow be beneficial to building placement as well as simply a great way to view the park and pass the time.
Yet above all, the most detrimental flaw and hands down deal-breaker which unless fixed turns this from a four-plus star ranking game into an absolute piece of rubbish which should not be bothered with is that there is a fatal glitch / bug where if too many buildings are moved at once, then the system shuts down and cannot sync with the servers. This results in the all categories of the peep satisfaction dropping to zero and subsequently a major loss of visitors to the park. Whilst this may not seem like a big deal, the satisfaction levels directly affect income generated and as such through this glitch the game ultimately freezes progress as without earing any gold then new attractions cannot be built and no upgrades can be completed.
The most annoying part of this glitch is however, that there are still peeps in the park who will often spawn positive thought bubbles and give hearts, yet through a flaw in the code, the game halts.
Until these glitches and bugs are fixed, then DO NOT waste your time getting to know and love this game as it will only end in spite. Once this issues have been fixed then by all means, here is a great sim game with a nice focus which can and should be enjoyed by all! Therefore as it stands it scores less than one star, yet once the bugs have been cleaned out, then RollerCoaster Tycoon® Touch™ would earn a four star plus rating.
