Oopstacles

An Introduction to Oopstacles

Form Australian based independent game developers Crystal Pug comes a visually exciting and unabashedly fun obstacle runner! Often expressed (and very accurately so) as being a cross between the hit television series Wipeout and the most famous of iconic gaming characters Mario, Oopstacles optimizes rag doll physics in this timed runner based arcade style game.

Oopstacles : Gameplay

The controls of Oopstacles are extremely simple! By pressing anywhere on screen the avatar will automatically run through the course.  By releasing, characters halt in movement which allows them to time runs and jumps through the various obstacles.  The flipside of the controls being so simple is that the auto run and jump function are activated through the same action.  Jumps can be controlled through longer presses with rapid releases.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Oopstacles

As obvious as it is, Oopstacles is all about precision. Players should therefore not be afraid of learning by trial and error.  Some stages will require players to race through at top speed whilst other stages will force players to take small sensitive steps to delicately weave their way avoiding traps.  Persevering through failed attempts is especially important on stages involving jumps as jumping can take a little practice to perfect.  If in doubt however, try to jump earlier than later and longer than shorter on first jumps and then rapid taps afterwards for consecutive jumps following.  If unsuccessful in runs and close to collecting bonus coins, then players should make the most out of watching videos for coins and spend them on reviving characters, or save up to purchase new characters.

Personal Impressions // Review of Oopstacles

Great fun for all ages! One of the great positives of Oopstacles is without a doubt how humble it is in gameplay.  The cute and colourful designs with the simplicity of the one touch controls make Oopstacles perfect for players of all ages and especially children.  The ability to record runs to watch, learn and share with friends is another huge selling point which is both fun and productive.  With so much going for it, there is little to critique of Oopstacles.  That said however, the game does become slightly repetitive after continuous play.  The only other thing is that if the game offered the “create your own character” feature, then the depth of the game would increase incrementally! This feature whilst comically fun for adults would also severely strengthen its appeal to a younger demographic.  Three and a half stars out of five.
