Tips ‘n’ Tricks for MARVEL Contest of Champions
Dash and Dodge!
Whilst blocking prevents attacks minor attacks from dealing any damage, setting up a solid defense takes time and can be hard to properly time to perfection. The same is also true of hard hitting ‘heavy’ attacks, thus it higher recommended to try to get into habit of dodging backwards and dashing forward instead. This allows players to dart in and out of range to then counter oncoming offenses with a quick ‘soft’ strike or to surge forward on retreating players to unleash a barrage assault of multiple ‘soft’ and ‘medium’ flurry multi-hit combos.
(Hard attacks are however a very profitable and advised option if after dashing your opponent back up against the wall / edge of the arena where once up on the ropes, players should resort to old school button mashing pound and ground!)
The downside to this tactic is however, is that that players need to be aware of the special abilities of their adversary. Some characters are able to hit fast, some hard and others with distance. It is especially for those opponents that can attack with range that players need to shake up this dash, dodge tactic to incorporate and perfect the use of a solid block then attack timing.
Another final note on the dash and dodge, is that roughly 90% of the time it is better to dodge backwards or immediately through up a defensive block as soon as the round commences. There are many A.I opponents who won’t attack straight off the bat but the majority are literally quicker to the punch and thus, it is better to block or evade first, then dash in with some well-timed combos.
Battle of Attrition!
The majority of quests involve players fighting a multiple of battles within each level quest, so if wanting to play straight through and using as few heal potions as possible, smash smart! The best way to do this is to lead with the weakest champion available as enemy opponents tend to increase in difficulty throughout the quest. In addition, it is preferable to try to fight champions back to back if possible, even with weaken health and at a minor ability disadvantage, for this allows fresh full strength champions to take charge on the boss level when the going gets tough.
This however doesn’t always work, so be prepared for some serious, serious lengthy grinding within MARVEL Contest of Champions! Thus for quests which contain multiple routes to achieve the 100% ‘exploration’, remember what the foes their abilities and as such rework your own roster to best capitalize on class attributes.
Pay Attention to Special Abilities.
Each champion has unique and common abilities to their subsequent character. For example, Wolverine obviously has a power of ‘regeneration’ which restores health over time and Spiderman has ‘precision’ which allows him to hit with perfect accuracy. Abilities increase in strength as the champion levels up / ranks up.
A few more examples of special abilities are;
- “Nullify” – briefly disables opponents special ability and amour up.
- “Armour Breaks” – briefly removes opponents armour to allow for increased inflicted max damage.
- “Bleed” – similar to “Poison” and “Cosmic Radiation”, deals a fixed amount of damage over a brief period of time.
- “Fury” – as the name implies increases attack damage.
Apart from the Special Abilities, there are also Special Attacks which should be employed after your opponent has finished a stint of blocking or after a few short sharp swift attacks. It is also necessary to be aware of whether the special attack is a close range or long range attack. If your champion is two star or higher then the secondary attack becomes available which can be timed by watching the energy meter on the lower left side of the screen.
Categorize the Classes
Champions are sorted into a “rock, scissors, paper” style of class where each type has special attributes that strengthen or weaken the champion in regards to the character that they are battling. Selecting the right or wrong character for each fight can either make or break the battle so be sure to refer to the following breakdown of class groups when choosing your team and be sure to include as many classes as possible – even if this means subbing in a weaker character over a stronger one.
|Champion Class||Stronger Than||Weaker Than|
Or can perhaps be better visualized as;
Amass the Masses!
As with any character / card collecting game, there is always the conundrum of whether to use upgrades on the immediately available characters or stockpile them for future higher tiered characters. This obviously is subject to player preference, yet by being able to sell lower grade characters it is perhaps the best strategy to upgrade the strongest one or two champions and save a few upgrades for when most needed or your inventory is nearing full capacity. That said, leveling up heroes to be able to then rank up, should be a priority yet preference and focus should always be given to higher star champions. Yet above all, the more the better – so try to collect as many champions as possible before selling any of them.
Among all of the diverse forms of currency and necessary items (gold, chips, various grades of crystal, energy bars, etc.) needed to succeed in MARVEL Contest of Champions ‘Units’ are the premium in game currency and as such need to be with utmost precision! Though they can be used in a wide range of ways, the most profitable way is to save for as long as possible and to then convert them into Premium Hero crystals which in turn can then summon high tier champions. By saving units for champions and simply grinding out lower level replays to earn gold and upgrade shards, to improve and advance basic characters, players best use available resources to speed through progression.
Play for Free!
MARVEL Contest of Champions is nothing else a perfect example of the typical freemium game! Free to play and enjoy, but unless willing to grind out countless hours, days and weeks replaying missions to be able to earn enough to be able to acquire those ultra-high rank characters and stages, players must, have to, must spend money which ultimately turns the freemium game into a subtle ‘pay-to-win’ game.
Whilst there is essentially nothing wrong with this business strategy, as players can still finish the game without spending a cent, it should be noted that if players do decide to invest real money into the game then do so patiently and wisely!! For as with similar styled business based games, special package deals frequently are available, upon which purchasing those offer much greater value and rewards than simply buying off the cuff. So just to reiterate. Play for free! Yet, if having become completed enthralled and desperate for more, then try to hold off until a valid cost effective safe promotion pops up before spending any real life currency.
Personal Impressions of MARVEL Contest of Champions
The structured level of progression through the impressive amount of levels, means players can happily enjoy the game at a an enjoyable pace before deciding to battle it out for the long haul by needing to grind replayed levels in order to truly advance.
The 3D graphics are exciting and fresh amidst the familiar classic 2D side scrolling platform battler. The range of characters are diverse enough to entice laymen players with common, famous characters as well as excite hardcore fanboys with more obscure less known heroes and villains. The sound effects and BGM are adequate yet nothing too groundbreaking.
Whilst it still far beyond the perfect game, for a mobile device free app MARVEL Contest of Champions does an amazingly good job! So if a fan of MARVEL, platform ‘beat em ups’ for just looking for a good free game, then Contest of Champions is a definite worthwhile download! But if you do so, then be aware of the limited freemium playtime is available before the “pay to win” aspect kicks in. All in all, four stars out of five.
