Knight Saves Queen

An Introduction to Knight Saves Queen

Chess with a twist! Knight Saves Queen is the latest release from popular game makers Dobsoft who also gave us such fun and easy to play titles like Gun Fu: Stickman 2.  Similarly Knight Saves Queen is an extremely simple and fun puzzle game based on the classic Chess format yet in a modified variation.

Knight Saves Queen : Gameplay

Working off the iconic checkered board the ultimate goal of the game is as the title implies, to maneuver the valiant knight to save the quintessential queen. Doing so however, is not necessarily quite so simple as each level incrementally increases in difficulty as more enemy troops of varying strengths are added as move limits are also decreased.  Following on, as the levels increase players also unlock other friendly troops which need to be used in union to all come together to save the Queen!  Moves are turn based with each piece only able to move in the traditional chess format, i.e. knights in an L-shape, rooks vertically and horizontally and pawns only moving forwards and attacking diagonally etc.

Features of Knight Saves Queen

  • Use the pieces from chess in an entirely new puzzle game!
  • Dozens of brain-bending levels, with more puzzles added regularly
  • Gorgeous visuals accompanied by a full orchestral score
  • 12 achievements to hunt down

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Knight Saves Queen

Know Your Pieces!

Whilst the knight is obviously very recognizable in its appearance, others are not so easily discernable and can often be confused. And with one simple misstep resulting in possible failure, it is important to know what piece is what and exactly how they move and react with other pieces.  For example, it is easy to overlook the range of rooks and bishops which attack automatically if any pieces comes into their line of attack.  The reason why this complacency is that since enemy troops remain dormant until a viable attack becomes available and hence easy to overlook…

Plan Ahead!

The levels of Knight Saves Queen are free from timers yet harsh with mistakes and efficiency of moves. Thus since a level run ends automatically if the knight takes a hit, and that wasting moves will not reward any stars, it is a must that players take advantage of the lack of timers and thus plan their attacks and think multiple moves ahead. So if faced against a row of pawns, try to work from the top/behind and work your way down/forwards which prevents them from being able to attack you.

Sacrifice!

Just as with real chess the end goal is all that counts. Therefore, it is necessary in some levels to sacrifice a pawn, a rook or more in order to draw enemy troops into desired targeted areas for future attacks.  Thus if constantly failing to grab that prized golden star, try experimenting with different sacrifices until the perfect combination of moves can be found!

Personal Impressions // Review of Knight Saves Queen

With chess being one of the oldest known games to date, it is always refreshing to see a fresh take on the classic game. The stress free short segments of gameplay is great for play on the go.  The colourful animation with quirky sound effects along with having the key character being the most unique and technical of all the pieces means that Knight Saves Queen is also great for younger children or those just learning the game.

On the downside though there are a couple of things which could perhaps be improved upon. (Apart from there never being any mention of the Queens husband and the Knights Liège the King, and the fact that the Queen is actually the most powerful piece on the board let’s just go along with the Lancelot paradigm.)

The first being that considering that a level ends immediately with a single hit to the knight, the time lag for heart rejuvenation to replay levels is extremely slow. The second slightly annoying aspect is that players must completely perfect absolutely all levels before being able to unlock the next series of levels in the new world.  Yet as with most puzzle games there always seems to be that finicky level that is hard to beat, which means players must then buy a star with coins to continue playing.  The catch is however that coins can only be bought with real life currency and as such, the game becomes pay-to-win.   That said nevertheless, Knight Saves Queen is still fun for a while and worth trying for yourself.  Four stars out of five.
