An Introduction to Geostorm

From fervent movie / TV based and inspired game makers Sticky Studious comes another brain teasing puzzler that is sure to test both avid gamers and newbs alike. Whether a fan of the movie or completely unaware of its very existence Geostorm is cleverly designed with intriguing levels that players can wander through with their avatar as they strive to escape the impending doom.

Faced with unprecedented changes in the worlds natural weather due to the rapid increase of climate change numerous weather controlling satellites were launched into orbit. Yet instead of saving life on Earth the satellite network has been hacked and now the very tools which were designed to protect have been programed to wreak havoc and destroy all!  Players adopt the roles of three different characters in three different locations as they search to download the satellite schematics which can be sent to the international space station in the hopes of halting and reversing the damage, all the while fervently racing to escape the immediate dangers.

Geostorm : Gameplay

In similar style to the famous Lara Craft Go and UNCHARTED: Fortune Hunter this turn based puzzler involves three different main characters in their attempt to survive a series of natural disasters such as a tsunami, artic freeze and lightning storm. With simple yet intricately hidden levers, buttons etc. players use taps and swipes to push / pull objects, activate devices and think ahead and past in order to work their way through a Rube Goldberg style of events so that they can endure though the cataclysm.

Features of Geostorm

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Geostorm

Stay Vigil!

As with other games of the genre, the absolute most important aspect is to stay attentive, observant and aware of all that is around. If there is some water – it may be able to be jumped into, some glass – it may be broken, a tool – wield it!  Whatever the object or obstacle may be, it is there for a reason, be only to be a distraction.  That reason may not be obvious at first yet by paying close attention to what is and isn’t around, players can better work through scenes. So keep in mind! – as there are no time limits it is best to always take a moment before making a move to plot a course and try to predict what switches need to be activated and where the schematics may be hidden.

Replay Missions

Not all objectives can be completed at the same time. For example, there are times where players must choose between goals such as in level two where players must download the satellite schematics and escape within a limited amount of moves.  Therefore, in order to complete both missions players need to focus on one then replay to complete the other.  When deciding on what to attempt first it is of course always better to keep the limited move style objective till last as players can test and experiment their way through the first goal and then complete the second with much more efficiency.

Personal Impressions // Review of Geostorm

What can I say but – “here we go again”. As has been stated near countless times before here at Blue Lagoon, games based off of movie titles or big name franchises rarely involve anything more than the most basic of concepts and shoddy gameplay whilst relying on either brash graphics or simply the name itself to mask that it is nothing more than a cash grab bait and switch.

Geostorm however actually seems to break out of this stereotype with its clean graphics and smooth operation of gameplay. The size and length of levels make it great for both playing on the go and for long sit-down sessions.  The increase in difficulty is also well managed as levels start out fairly easy-going yet evolve and progress into quite a complex and difficult string of tasks which need to be meet in order to succeed.

Whilst it is very a basic carbon copy of other similar games and doesn’t offer any ground breaking new content, it is extremely accurate and fitting to its name as the movie itself is also just another typical Hollywood disaster movie. So if starting out with low expectations players can actually be happily surprised and enjoy a good amount of gameplay, if however wanting the absolute best gaming experience ever, perhaps Geostorm is not worth the download.  That said, considering what it is Geostorm scores very well if not for the overabundance of lengthy in-app pop up advertising.  Four stars out of five.
