Futurama: Game of Drones

An Introduction to Futurama: Game of Drones

Based off the iconic cult series from the creators of “The Simpsons” comes a new Candy Crush style puzzler that ups the ante where players have to connect four (instead of three) matches to clear pieces.  Strengthened by a hilarious plot filled with true character voice overs, fans of the show and those unfamiliar alike will thoroughly enjoy this fun arcade puzzler!

Futurama: Game of Drones : Gameplay

Similar to many only matching app games, the goal is to connect identical items together to clear the way for more pieces and thus more points.  Starting out simply in the lower levels the game soon progresses to include more difficult criteria and tougher bosses and objectives that need to be defeated and completed.

Yet rather than just being a simple selection game, there is actually a lot more going on behind the scenes and if wanting to succeed players will need paying attention to!

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Futurama: Game of Drones

Combine the Combinations!

Following on from the standard match three, players are required to match four… or more… so for the best way to clear the screen and deliver the drones is to aim to link multiple combinations together. Such as;

  • A combination of four clear the highlighted pieces.
  • Combining five of the same will create a line breaker drone which will clear all pieces on a line.
  • Linking six pieces creates a bomb drone which destroys circumferential pieces.
  • Fusing seven pieces generates the most powerful of all of the super drones, the prism drone which once activated delivers all drones of the matching colour instantly!

Yet above all of these individual combinations, the primary way in which players can clear stages and progress easily throughout the game is to combine all types of combinations by like chess thinking multiple moves ahead and foreseeing future combinations that will be triggered by a single move. For example, leaving certain Super-Drones on the board and then mixing them with other Super-Drones create Crazy Super-Drones which can have amazing properties depending on how you concoct them!  As a quick reference, try to aim for;

  • Triple-Dipple Super-Duper:
    Line drone + bomb drone. Clears out three lines at once!
  • Super-Duper Line:
    Line drone + line drone. Functions like a line drones but sends out a blast in every direction!
  • Super-Duper Bomb:
    Bomb drone + bomb drone. Works like regular bomb drones but covers a much larger area.
  • Super-Duper Line Prism:
    Line drone + prism drone. Move this onto another regular drone and all drones of that color will turn into line drones.
  • Super-Duper Bomb Prism:
    Bomb drone + prism drone. Replaces all drones of the color you match it with bombs!
  • Super-Duper Prism:
    Prism drone + prism drone. Clears the entire board!

Maximise Your Moves!

Similar to many other types of puzzle matching games, finishing with available moves left over will be converted into super drones and thus more points and more stars. Working from the bottom up will also spread more pieces and open up more opportunities.

Observe the Objectives!

With a variety of different gameplays available, be sure to always aim to complete the task at hand first! This means ignoring easy matches but focusing on moves that will lead towards clearing the goal.  This can be achieved in a variety of ways however, such as linking long strings together to create super drones, or to simply charge your characters power which can then be used to target particular drones which upon clearing can win the mission.

Personal Impressions of Futurama: Game of Drones

Having grown up on the world changing series, “The Simpsons” before diligently following onto a similar iconic franchise, “Futurama” and then falling instantly in love with the world of “The Game of Thrones”, downloading and trying out this game was a no-brainer! … Despite the name of the game having absolutely nothing in connection with the epic fantasy tale except the play upon words pun within the name.

Futurama: Game of Drones is however, a rather successful take on the already established matching puzzler genre … ‘plus alpha’. (Think Street Fighter).  Where the numerous matching and busting strategies actually lead to a much more involved game than what is at first lead to believe.  This can be seen amongst the storyline and character card collecting system.

This variety and depth of gameplay is rare amongst such generic “brand labelled” money making spin-offs, yet somehow, here it seems to pull through by the skin of its teeth and question users on whether it is their new all-time favourite, or their most hated game of all time!

I also highly appreciate the move count system as opposed to the timer based rush for completion as this leads to deeper thought and more involved gameplay rather than just mashing swipes together for the quick and easy play, such as can be enjoyed in the fast, frantic, frenetic fever of Tsum Tsum for example.

Full of parodic one liners and themes throughout (eg. Twitcher) the well scripted and candid banter and style of play and storyline left a positive resonance and thus scores a solid four and a half stars out of five!

4 half out of 5
