Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Fire Emblem Heroes

Heed the Character Classes!

As with so many other games from all different types of genres, FE Heroes uses a Rock-Scissors-Paper weighting system to give strengthens and weaknesses to character class categories. Yet unlike other games, due to emphasis on tactical strategy of Fire Emblem, the weighting system is actually quite important.  Therefore it is important to plan ahead by adjusting your party by before heading into a new map.  This means that is at times better to take weaker characters if they are a class advantage as doing so is also a great way for them to gain experience and level up safely.  Therefor it is important to remember the sequence of what beats what, which is; Red > Green, Green > Blue and closing the loop Blue > Red.

Don’t Forget the Basics!

Considering the strict turn based format, it is important to make the most out of single move. Therefore by knowing the stats of each character players can better strengthen attacks and reinforce defense.  Whilst most hardcore gamers will already know the abbreviations and what they refer to, if in doubt keep reading otherwise scroll down to the next tip.

HP: Hit Points refers to a characters overall health. The more HP the longer a character can survive.
ATK: Attack Points refers to amount of damage attacks do.  The higher the ATK the less amount attacks are needed to win battles.
SPD: Speed refers to the rate at which characters attack.  The higher the SPD the more attacks characters can deliver per move.
DEF: Defense refers to the amount of physical damage a character can receive.  The higher the DEF the less HP will be lost.
RES: Resistance refers to defense against magic attacks.  The higher the RES also preserves HP.
SP: Skill Points are the currency required to obtain new skills.  The higher the SP, the more skills a character can have and thus the stronger they become, which makes SP actually the most important of all.

Order of Orbs!

As tempting as it is to go all out and try to get as many high ranked heroes as possible as quickly as possible, orbs being as precious as they are need to be spent wisely. Therefore it is best to save and spent at least eight orbs to upgrade the Castle.  Doing so may seem like a waste of orbs but if done at the very start of picking up the game players can rapidly rise to greatness since upgrading the Castle not also improves aesthetics but more importantly the higher the castle level, the more XP characters gain in battle.  By spending just orb, the XP gained gets boosted by 20% so for a mere 8 orbs spent at the very beginning players start off with a 60% boost of XP which rapidly levels up characters quickly.

After that, sure go get some new heroes or keep going with castle upgrades… When wanting to summon new heroes however, it is best to save up 20 orbs so that players can make the most out of consecutive summoning rates.

Queue the Quests

One of the great features of Fire Emblem Heroes is the depth of the game! With hundreds of characters and modes of play there are also a huge amount of quests and events which offer a magnitude of prizes.  Therefore before simply blindly jumping into battle be sure to check the Quest log and scroll through the different options available.  Beyond the daily and story quests the monthly and special event quests offer some of the biggest loot.

Therefore it is best to play with purpose!  Select quests which offer the reward most wanting at that time.  If wanting to level up existing characters select quests which reward Shards and Crystals.  If wanting new heroes or to upgrade the castle, look for quests which reward orbs.  Yet keep in mind that it is best to start by clearing a chapters in the Story Map as they work as a built in tutorial to help players learn the basics, before focusing attention on other quests.

Hero Feathers.

Hero feathers may not seem important at the start but they quickly become very valuable! Once a character reaches level 20 they will need Hero feather to further any upgrades.  Besides completing quests which reward them the best way through friends and allies.  By talking making new in-game friends and speaking with allies along with the “Greet” option on the friends tab, players can increase their chance of being gifted some from said friends.

Team Compositions.

With so many heroes available it can be a little overwhelming to know how to pick the best combination. Once a large enough number of heroes has been acquired players should open the edit team menu and preset a variety of different options which can be saved and then quickly deployed into battle.  Players should therefore take advantage of the very generous amounts of slots to try a number of different styles ranging from very balanced teams with one of each different type of hero to also have a few slots of very specific teams of all archers, all magicians, all warriors etc.

Keep in mind that it is also critical to match character types when battling. For example for ground to ground battles swords, axes and daggers are best yet for flying opponents archers are much better suited.  Therefore be sure to always check the character classes of enemies before entering into battle!  When in battle it also important to remember that blocking and defense is as equally critical as a good offence.

Training Tower.

If heroes simply aren’t levelling up as fast as wanted players should either focus on missions which offer shards and crystals which in turn can be used to level characters up incrementally. The Training Tower is one such place where players can rapidly earn these rewards.  When using shards and crystals it is also important to be sure to use elementals that suit.  Otherwise, upon completing a chapter new difficulty levels become unlocked so it is also advised to go back and replay previous missions on harder difficulty.

Personal Impressions // Review of Fire Emblem Heroes

The simplicity of gameplay mixed with the subtleties of strategy and how seamlessly they balance each other out makes Fire Emblem Heroes a fantastic game for beginner gamers and hardcore veteran tacticians alike! Beyond this balance being the clear winner there is actually a lot going on in the simple to navigate format.  The breadth of characters and richness of still graphics along with the retro pixilated version of battles mirrors the underlying balance of simple yet difficult, soft yet hard.  Whilst these graphics and vivid animated scenes are exquisite to watch they do slow down the flow of battles and end up taking a lot of time, however as they can be turned off in the setting menu the flow is actually very good for a RPG, especially when using the ‘Auto-Battle’ feature.

The range of playing modes, quests, rewards and characters is another indication to how well developed FE Heroes is and further showcases the depth and longevity of gameplay. Whilst it is very easy to pick up and play with no prior experience with the Fire Emblem universe, there is actually a lot going on behind the scenes which makes FE Heroes truly a game that players can grow with.

Apart from the occasional glitch where the game inexplicitly shuts down, there is very little going against it. The tutorial may be a little light on details for some, yet the by using the auto-battle feature players can quickly learn how to best move, attack and defend.  So if wanting a vivid, action packed strategic game full of Meta based upgrades and combinations then look no further! Four stars out of five.
