An Introduction to Comix Zone
From one of the most iconic and pioneering companies in gaming history SEGA comes the latest title to be included in their “Sega Forever” collection of classic games. The remake of the iconic Comix Zone! First released in 1996, Comix Zone was unique on its launch as being one of the first interactive games set within a comic book world. With it first being released in 1995 for the Genesis console the game quickly rose to quiet acclaim among fans.
A 2D action platformer at its core, players adopt the avatar of ‘Sketch’ a real life comic book artist who is trapped within the pages of a post-punk graphic world, as he progress through panels of comic based adventures.
Comix Zone : Gameplay
Armed with standard punch, jump kick attacks Sketch also makes use of bombs and knives along with other power-ups and boosts that aid him and his pet rat ‘Roadkill’ to take down the evil enemy ‘Mortus’. In true comic book style, different actions result in different results which can actually cause unexpected and different outcomes.
With a virtual d-pad on the left and three action keys on the right, players can also double tap and press and hold to perform special moves like tearing off a piece of the paper background to create an attacking paper aeroplane.

Personal Impressions // Review of Comix Zone
Having first been initiated to the gaming world on the iconic Atari and then growing up on Nintendo before maturing to the original PlayStation, for some reason I never really became as enchanted with SEGA consoles despite having a few. That said, Comix Zone is a fantastic example of reviving a retro console game to modern mobile gaming devices. The graphics are true to the original as is the nostalgic sound effects. The storyline is great and very engaging, yet unfortunately is interrupted by pop-up advertising upon each new attempt.
Yet all in all, depending on player preferences, players will generally either love or hate Comix Zone! This is due to the lack of second chances, extra lives and save points. Therefore, for hardcore games with a whole lot of patience, then here is a game that they can really invest some time into. For other more casual layman gamers, then the constant replays could become quite frustrating. Therefore, Comix Zone is extremely hard to rate as it could very easily be a top notch five out of five perfect game, yet for others who don’t enjoy it could be a very quick delete of the app. Thus, in blatant abstention, Comix Zone scores a politically correct two and a half stars out of five.
