Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Bud Farm: Grass Roots

Due to the focus of growing a variety of strains and upgrading equipment to produce a greater yield and harvest, player’s first order of business is to invest time in the game. However, following on from that players should take heed in;

Up the Upgrades!

By far and away the quickest and most important factor in progressing through the game is to be constantly upgrading all equipment. First off, bettering the generator will open up more pots, which means more plants and more cash! Next, for best efficiency focus on upgrading lights and watering machines first to maximize yield as fast as possible.  Upgrading the noticeboard / van, dispensary and storage stash levels, also quickly become to efficiently progressing.

Water, Water, Water!

Upon planting a timer beside the plant will start a countdown which signals when a plant can be watered and re-watered. Doing so as often as possible will increase the plants happiness, shown underneath the plant which in turns produces a higher yield.  Watering also significantly reduces the overall grow time, thus it is advantageous to take note of water times and log in to do so as regularly as possible.

Smite the Spider Mites!

Squashing bugs quickly becomes a major part of the game. Yet as time consuming as it is, it will lead to healthier bigger buds, but also rewards players with XP and “karma” which by completing certain other tasks can produce great rewards!

Follow Floyd!

Completing Floyd’s missions is another very quick way to gain new items that are necessary to finance upgrades. The missions are usually quite simple and easy to complete but reward players with highly valuable items.

Dominate the Dispensary!

With limited slots available it is recommended to first off buy an extra slot for five bud-bucks. When pricing your products if wanting a fast turnaround then aim for about 75% of the max price.  Otherwise price the most valuable (i.e. generally the rarest item) at max price then list another item at its most minimum, e.g. ten homegrown for a dollar as a lure to bait shoppers.  It is also a good idea to have one slot free so that is storage is maxed out, you can sell something cheaply to free up space rather than having to trash it.

Plan your Plants!

Obviously it is best to grow the plants needed to fulfill orders, yet if trying to anticipate, then focus on short timed plants when you can actively play the game, then pant longer, 12hr, endeavors before you sleep or start work etc.

It is also good to plant your most valuable, longest grow time seeds in your best pot which has the most upgraded lights and water. Doing so rewards bigger plants and more buds for the same amount of time as opposed to using a lower grade pot, which should be constantly cycled through with quick growing plants.

Furthering on from this in more detail …
Obviously with different levels and stages being unlocked, it can be hard to know which plant to focus on.  However, with for example five possible available, I would always keep the second and third best pots constantly growing “purple kush” (which is always in high demand and very profitable. The fourth pot switching being “og kush”, “pineapple express”, “maui waui” (which is used for milk), and “northern lights” (used for butter).  The fifth and least upgraded pot should only be used for homegrown or another very fast growing bud that can be rotated quickly to still produce good weight.
Lastly the first and hopefully most upgraded pot should be used ideally for mystery seeds, and if not for whatever seed fulfills the most desired achievement or order… if unsure, then simply go with purple kush again and sell it at a premium in the dispensary!
If with seven or more pots, then again go with three stains of the more time consuming seeds like “banana kush” and other popular buds like “strawberry kush” etc

Spend Wisely!

There are two types of in game currency used, coins and pot-bucks. Coins are earned by fulfilling orders, selling goods and are used to build new structures or upgrade existing ones.  Potbucks however, being the primary currency are very frugally dealt out upon completing achievements or buy buying with real life money.  Thus it is crucial to not be frivolous when spending potbucks!  Firstly, as with virtually every simulation / grow / build game, the most wasteful way of using the prime currency is to spend up timers!  With a little patience it is much better to spend potbucks on guano (which instantly grows a plant), to buy missing items needed for upgrades or my personal favourite of buying mystery seeds.  Using guano to raise a plant will cost either four, three, two or one bag.  The cost difference depend on the stage of the plant where a seed will cost four bags yet becomes cheaper the larger the shoot, thus players should always try to water at least a couple of times and then use the guano on at the last stage which will allow for more plants and buds quicker.

Keeping a strong workforce and even a few slackers is great for staffing facilities and earning coins. Whilst it is obviously preferable to have active workers than free loading slackers, there is also some benefit for keeping them around as they will offer surprise gifts every now and then.  They will also cough up a parting present when given the boot.

Personal Impressions of Bud Farm: Grass Roots

With virtually no storyline whatsoever the obviously clear appeal of this game is the unique spin of growing dope buds as opposed to the standard farming concept. The simple animation of visuals, sound effects and background music are all great, yet by far the winning factor is simple one liners, attention to details with strained red eyes etc.

Some upgrades are quite expensive and thus requires a fair bit of grinding, but when storage levels and low and not having the right buds to fulfill orders etc. the game becomes stagnant! The only way to fix that is to trash some items or crops, but unfortunately you cannot choose to trash part of stock!  It is an all or none scenario where in wanting to clear some room for more valuable stock, players are forced to waste an entirety of something.  For example, the “homegrown” bud is clearly the best to trash since it is free to grow, yet having to trash 78 just to clear room for five spaces is very frustrating.

I personally also didn’t really enjoy the spamming feel of offers for free potbucks. Furthermore, the loading time between screens as well as the speed of deliveries also feels a little slow when switching back and forth.  Overall two and a half stars out of five.
