An Introduction to Armello
From Australian indie game developers League of Geeks, comes one of the most visually stimulating digital role playing strategy board game. Starting out as a basic Kickstarter project, this multiplatform adventure RPG has gone on to receive various esteemed accolades and awards.
Set in the fantasy kingdom of Armello players adopt roles of anthropomorphic animals from different clans as they campaign to become the next king or queen as the current King has gone mad due to a mysterious dark force which has corrupted the land which is known only as “the rot”.
Armello : Gameplay
Similar in gameplay to other card collecting games, action is turn based using dice and cards to move, complete quests and battle. The playing board is made up of hexagon tiles with randomly generated features like forests, swamps, mountains and dungeons etc. which can either add or subtract advantages and buffs. Featuring a day / night cycle, different characters can gain or lose advantages in battle. As the game progresses players need to carefully access their cards to equip weapons, cast spells and use items which grant special powers. During quests characters forge alliances by adding cards to their deck as well as playing cards in wait on certain tiles which act as traps for future moves.
Expanding upon each character’s unique and different passive abilities heroes has four attributes – hit points (body), Spirit, Coins and Rot (corruption/health) – which players must take constantly pay attention to successfully complete quests and defend against outside onslaughts.

Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Armello
Know Your Heroes!
Just as with traditional board based role playing games, each of the main characters possesses certain strengths and weakness which consequently determines strategies. So before jumping into a singular character, be sure to review each and consider different avenues of play.
Thane: The Winter Wolf
The archetypical barbarian is the powerhouse with speed that slices his way through enemies with ease! Low on Wit Stats (Card Draw) and Spirit (Magic), his best method of success is to wipe out enemies through dueling other heroes and banes, to gain enough prestige before challenging the King. Thus to counter his weakness aim to equip the Wit amulet or complete any quest which raises card draws. His strength however does also allow him a better chance at the rot victory.
Amber: The Far Seeker
The jack of all trades Amber is the most evenly balanced of all of the heroes of Armello. Her all-roundedness makes her perfect for beginning players yet since she is also a master of no particular field, the best way to win with Amber is to play the political route and aim for the Prestige victory while strengthening with Fight or Wits amulets.
Merucio: The Grinning Blade
The thief of the group is quick of foot and mind alike. With his special talent being that of “scoundrel” Merucio can steal gold from other players when capturing settlements formerly held by them. With fairly even stats across the board, by focusing all attention on upgrading his already high wits and laying traps and sabotaging other players, Merucio is best suited for the slow and steady war of attrition form of winning, rather than a head-on assault, even though he is still very capable with his rapier when needed.
Sana: The Forest Sister
The mage archetype is powerful in body and Spirit and as such wields magic better than any other character. Thus relying on spells, shields and patience, Sana’s best means of success is avoiding contact as much as possible. Therefore, when playing as Sana it is important to complete as many quests as possible to aim for Spirit Stone victory rather than physically forcing the aggressive win.
Brun: The Oakbreaker
The quintessential tank of the game, Brun is an overpowering force with huge amounts of health and defense. His Scarcaster talent means that by focusing effort on upgrading his already impressive HP and defense Brun is nearly unstoppable in fights and as such the best way to capturing the throne is through a Battle Victory, prestige or rot win.
Zosha: The Assassin
This elusive assassin is the master of guerilla warfare. Her Shadow talent enables her to be near invisible at night to strike opponents and then run away and evade during the day. As strong as this talent is however, Zosha requires great skill to capture the flag, as she is essential a crystal blade that cuts clean and deep yet shatters easily due to her very low HP. Therefore, if able to perfectly up her HP stats through Amulets and cards and able to dance around tank characters or magic enhanced characters, then Zosha can be a very fun Hero to play.
River: The Huntress
Her Huntress Talent gives her a first strike ability where she fires her bow at enemies to steal away one HP point before battles even start. Her stats however are extremely evenly set which means that any amulet will fit and that River is another great character for beginners. Yet if her talent is properly wielded as she darts and ducks all over the board, River can expertly snipe her way through opponents and subtly claim the thrown which makes her another fun choice for players with finesse!
Barnaby: The Screwloose
Also from the Rabbit Clan Barnaby is another Hero whose talent is a subtle yet powerful in the later stages of rounds. His card swapping ability allows him to tinker and adjust his stats free from penalty or cost whenever desired which means that if players are proficient with the entirety of cards, spells and items available and how they interact, this underdog rabbit, if fitted with a Spirit amulet is near limitless in his potential to take down much more initially impressive foes.
Practice Makes Perfect!
Due to the depth of Armello, new players will often come up against far more superior and experienced players when starting out. Needless to say rushing into the multiplayer arena will often end up in a very quick defeat. Yet try not to get too disheartened by this, instead return to the single player arc to hone skills and better formulate a preferred style of play practicing with each different character to find a few different methods of success before returning to the multiplayer arena to claim dominance.
Raise Your Reputation!
With one of the key attributes being the” Rot” factor, it is important to be constantly aware of characters reputation levels. By selecting the more honorable option when given the choice, players earn a higher reputation which earning higher rewards and bonuses yet on the flipside, by turning to the dark, players can in fact highway their way to the throne if they gather more rot than the mad king himself, which depending on the character may more often than not be the far better option.
Concentrate on the Cards.
As with all meta-based games the enjoyment of gameplay comes from studying the stats as opposed to any form of fast paced, adrenaline producing action with flashing lights and loud sounds. Therefore, due to the very nature of the game it is extremely important to know exactly how different actions perform and the timing in which to do so.
That said however, with action points being extremely valuable, it is best to treasure AP increasing cards as much as possible! Basically in short, the very best tip to winning and enjoying Armello is to thoroughly, thoroughly read the Game Guide!
Personal Impressions // Review of Armello
Dubbed as being the animal version of game of thrones, Armello is truly a unique and captivating gaming experience. The original premise is actually quite interesting with its blend of fantasy and politics as different anthropomorphic heroes strive to wrestle power away from other clans and unite the lands. Thus it is no matter that Armello has famously ben dubbed as being “A colourful and complex creation” that’s “Like Game of Thrones, only with animals.”
Considering the turn based structure of the game, despite being an MMO often feels much more like a solo player adventure. Therefore, the “choose-your-own-adventure” style of selecting quest options as well as the fight or flight choice which often comes up, feels like a very wasted and insincere feature. For as much potential as the game has and as beautifully rendered and well scripted as it is, the game for some intangible reason fails to live up to the initial promise. Especially as most of the multiplayer battles comprise of almost eighty percentage of approach or retreat and mainly focus on solo development with very little actual action between IRL players. This is remarkably noticeable if paired with a non-active player where gameplay grinds to a halt when waiting for opponent responses.
So if looking for something with a little more depth than the average game, then Armello is well worth the experience yet unless willing to actually invest serious time and energy into learning the intricacies of the meta and complexities of combining cards, perhaps Armello is best left for another day. This makes Armello very difficult to rate, as it will either super appeal to some yet definitely not to others. Therefore, considering all and especially the multiplayer wait issues, three stars out of stars out of five.
