Tips ‘n’ Tricks for 4 Pics 1 Word

Think Outside of the Box!

img_2755

Due to sheer number of photos used in game, some photos may be mixed and matched with others which can lead to some ambiguous perceptions for some images. Therefore, whilst the generally the most obvious thought that first comes to mind usually leads to the correct answer, if unsure and a little stumped then try thinking outside of the box and focusing on supporting aspects of the photo rather than what appears to be the main juxtaposition.

Another key tip is to try reading wording which spell the same a different way, e.g. ripping paper – tear and water on a check – tear.

Don’t Cheat!

The majority of rounds in 4 Pics 1 Word could be said to be far too easy, yet there are also some puzzles that for whatever reason, your brain just can’t seem to connect the dots. If you happen to get truly stuck on one of these levels, resist the urge cheat but instead use the hints function.

Each round completed earns players coins, which have but one use – the hint function! Therefore, there is no real need to stockpile coins except for future puzzles which can’t be solved. There are too types of hints available.  Spending 60 coins will reveal a single correct letter, whilst 90 coins will remove unneeded letter to help ascertain the correct answer.

Therefore, coins can rapidly be accrued try to resist the urge to cheat, as once you start on the path to the dark side, it is very hard to turn back!

Cheat!!

If after using coins and still not being able to find the correct answer or have unfortunately run out of coins, then forget everything of the above paragraph! Go online and google the descriptions of the four images and try to find the common link that way. If that however, sounds like too much effort, then simply go to one of the many online sites that have all answers listed.

Enjoy!

One of the best aspects of 4 Pics 1 Word is that it is family friendly and can be enjoyed by all and doesn’t have to be a solo adventure. So if stuck on a puzzle, ask a friend or family member.  4 Pics 1 Word can also be a great way to stimulate a dull party or enjoyed cuddled up with a loved one on a cold evening.

Personal Impressions of 4 Pics 1 Word

Rarely does a game so simple in gameplay have such addictive appeal!

The quality of images is clear and crisp and acts as a great advertisement to the stock image site (Fotolia) where most of the pictures appear to be sourced from. Whilst not normally a fan of cheap, easy games without much depth, I actually was quite impressed by this!  Just as a chef can use but a bare few basic ingredients to create a plethora of vastly different dishes, 4 Pics 1 Word does the same by using universal stock images to lead players forward.

The game can also be used as an excellent tool in learning the English language and would be a great fun way to engage EFL / ESL students either individually or in pairs, groups as they could race to reach certain level limits etc.

The only real negative to the game is the in app advertising which pops up after every third or fourth question. Whist most can generally be skipped after five seconds it does start to wear on one’s patience after a while.  Yet considering that they can be turned off for a low $2.99… it isn’t much of a serious issue.

All in all, here is a fantastic game that is great to pass the time away with! Well worth picking up! Four and a half stars out of five!
